On International Women’s Day 2026, the Malta Women’s Lobby recognizes progress while demanding that the government, employers, and men match public celebrations with meaningful action.<\/p>\n
Women have historically given much more than they have received, and current data shows that equality remains a distant goal. One in four women still experiences violence, and far too many perpetrators evade justice. In the workplace, over 27% of women face sexual harassment, and glass ceilings continue to stifle careers despite high levels of education.<\/p>\n
Economic inequality persists through a 5% wage gap and a staggering 40% pension gap, which risks the feminization of poverty. Although most women work full-time, they still carry the heaviest load of unpaid care and housework, leading to significant stress and limited opportunities, the group said.<\/p>\n
Support for mothers is equally lacking, with an 18-week maternity leave and parental leave paid only at sick-pay levels. Additionally, women in Malta face jail time for abortion, while gender stereotypes and misogyny are increasingly tolerated in public discourse.<\/p>\n
These issues demonstrate that gender equality is not a genuine government priority. Progress remains slow, fragmented, and reactive, failing women on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n
Symbolic gestures are no longer sufficient to address these systemic failures. It is time to move beyond fragmented efforts and invest in the genuine well-being of women and girls. The message for 2026 is clear: women have given enough, and it is finally time for society to give back.<\/p>\n
