Government to launch public consultation to turn Birżebbuġa oil storage site into green public area<\/p>\n
The government will launch a public consultation on plans to transform the former oil storage facility at Qajjenza into a sustainable, publicly accessible space, as cleanup works near completion, the Ministry for Planning and the Ministry for the Environment said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The public consultation opens tomorrow on the future use of the former oil storage site at San Luċjan, Birżebbuġa. This marks a new phase in the site’s transformation.<\/p>\n
The project aims to transform the old abandoned industrial oil storage facility into a public open space, a recreational area, and a sustainable development zone. The Planning Authority is launching a partial local plan review and a Development Brief to guide regeneration.<\/p>\n
The project aligns with Malta’s push towards a blue and green economy, sustainable development, and more public open spaces, the Ministry said.<\/p>\n
The cleanup of the oil tanks is already underway, with nine out of the twelve tanks already cleaned. The waste is being exported to certified EU facilities under environmental regulations.<\/p>\n
“These tanks that are no longer in use today can be transformed into recreational spaces… so that we can give this space back to the public,” Planning Minister Clint Camilleri said.<\/p>\n
Plans for the future of the site include cultural, entertainment, and recreational activities, the statement said.<\/p>\n
“This is another step forward in our plan to transform an industrial space into a sustainable and modern site that promotes innovation, the environment and the community,” Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said.<\/p>\n
