GRDA, GTA, GBC welcome new fast ferry routes but call for port upgrades<\/p>\n
The launch of new high-speed ferry connections between Gozo, Buġibba and Sliema has drawn strong support from both the Gozo Regional Development Authority (GRDA) and the Gozo Tourist Association (GTA), who praised the expansion as a major boost for inter-island connectivity. But alongside the enthusiasm came a clear call for further investment in Gozo’s maritime infrastructure to manage the increased traffic these services are expected to generate.<\/p>\n
The GRDA described the new route as a “significant step forward” towards achieving the vision outlined in its Regional Strategy for Gozo, which identifies improved accessibility and transport diversification as priorities for a more resilient and active island. The rollout of new fast-ferry services to Buġibba and Sliema, in addition to existing link to Valletta, is expected to make travel between the islands more flexible, efficient and convenient for residents, workers and visitors alike.<\/p>\n
According to the authority, these additional routes are not simply about speed or convenience. They form part of a deliberate effort to strengthen the island’s transport network and support steady, balanced growth. “Diversified entry and exit points are essential to sustain Gozo’s economic vitality, particularly in tourism, trade and services,” the GRDA said. It added that improved accessibility enhances residents’ quality of life, making it easier to move between islands for work, education, healthcare and leisure.<\/p>\n
The authority also stressed that lasting progress requires ongoing collaboration and sustained investment. “The introduction of these new fast catamaran routes is a positive and tangible example of policies translating into action,” the GRDA noted, reaffirming that multimodal transport development remains central to Gozo’s long-term ambitions.<\/p>\n
While the GRDA’s message was one of strategic achievement, the Gozo Tourism Association focused on the operational and infrastructural challenges that come with success. The organisation welcomed the new routes, saying the expansion offered “an additional mode of sea transport that will significantly enhance inter-island connectivity,” bringing clear benefits to the tourism industry and the wider public.<\/p>\n
The GTA said it has long advocated for an efficient transport network linking Gozo with Malta’s major coastal hubs, and it views direct connections to Sliema and Buġibba – two of Malta’s most popular tourist areas – as a move that could draw more visitors to Gozo. The association said the service is likely to appeal not only to tourists but also to domestic travellers and Gozitan residents seeking a faster and more convenient journey.<\/p>\n
However, the association cautioned that these expected increases in passenger numbers would add further pressure to Mġarr Harbour, which already operates at near capacity. “The increased activity generated by this service will place additional pressure on the already busy Mġarr Harbour,” the GTA said, urging authorities to consider creating more berthing space and developing a suitable terminal to accommodate the growing number of fast-ferry commuters.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, the association proposed that stakeholders “seriously explore viable plans for shifting fast-ferry operations to the port of Marsalforn,” arguing that such a move could ease congestion and provide an alternative base for maritime tourism operations.<\/p>\n
In its statement, the GTA commended ongoing government efforts to improve sea connectivity but stressed that “the time has come to prioritise infrastructural upgrades at Gozo’s ports” to ensure that facilities keep pace with demand.<\/p>\n
The Gozo Business Chamber (GBC) also notes with satisfaction the new fast ferry service inaugurated today between Sliema, Buġibba and Gozo. This service should help reduce the existing pressure on the service between Valletta and Mġarr, while creating new opportunities for Gozo and enhancing accessibility to the island.<\/p>\n
While the increase in services to Gozo is a positive development, the Chamber awaits the implementation of the expansion of the Gozo Channel fleet, and the introduction of the service to the Malta Freeport. With this increase in services, the need for the extension of Mġarr Harbour will become even more evident and is now becoming a crucial project.<\/p>\n
Other projects should also be considered, such as a logistics hub and a second road, which would strengthen the resilience of the current infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The permanent link project should also remain a long-term option that continues to be considered for the island of Gozo. Gozo deserves a long-term vision that goes beyond political cycles and enjoys consensus from all sides of the political spectrum. Gozo’s accessibility is not a privilege, but an essential need <\/p>\n
