New mental health block inaugurated at Mount Carmel Hospital<\/p>\n
A new acute mental health facility at Mount Carmel Hospital has been officially inaugurated following a €7.7 million investment, the Health Ministry and the European Funds Ministry said in a statement. <\/p>\n
The inauguration of Block 1 was attended by Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela and European Funds Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi.<\/p>\n
The newly completed facility includes two wards providing 46 beds for acute mental health care patients. Designed to offer a modern, secure and therapeutic environment, the block aims to support patient recovery and wellbeing through improved infrastructure and care conditions.<\/p>\n
Hospital authorities said the first patients are expected to begin using the facility in the coming days, according to timelines agreed upon by psychiatric and nursing professionals. The opening marks another step in strengthening Malta’s acute mental health services.<\/p>\n
As part of the wider project, a therapeutic garden located next to the building is also expected to open shortly. The outdoor space has been specifically designed as a safe area for patients with acute mental health conditions and is intended to aid recovery and overall wellbeing.<\/p>\n
Speaking during the inauguration, Abela described the project as part of the government’s continued investment in mental health infrastructure and high-quality patient care.<\/p>\n
“In mental health, the environment forms part of the healing process, and every effort has been made to ensure the highest international standards are observed,” he said.<\/p>\n
Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted the role of European funding in delivering the project, which was financed through the Recovery and Resilience Facility. He said the investment contributes to more modern, sustainable and energy-efficient healthcare infrastructure, while also improving conditions for both patients and healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n
He added that the project also supports Malta’s wider climate objectives through improved energy efficiency standards.<\/p>\n
