Unemployment rises 22% in a year as jobless total reaches 12,400<\/p>\n
The number of unemployed people in Malta rose by 22.1 per cent in April when compared to the same month last year, according to figures published by the National Statistics Office on Monday.<\/p>\n
The NSO said that 12,400 people were unemployed in April 2026, up from 10,152 in April 2025. The figure also represented a 1.4 per cent increase over March 2026.<\/p>\n
The national unemployment rate stood at 3.6 per cent in April, an increase of 0.6 percentage points when compared to 12 months earlier.<\/p>\n
Most unemployed persons were aged between 25 and 74, with 9,690 people in this category accounting for 78.1 per cent of the total. Youths aged between 15 and 24 made up the remaining 2,710 unemployed persons, or 21.9 per cent of the total.<\/p>\n
The unemployment rate for men stood at 3.6 per cent, unchanged from March 2026. The rate for women reached 3.5 per cent, an increase of 0.1 percentage points over the previous month.<\/p>\n
Youth unemployment reached 9.1 per cent in April, while the unemployment rate among persons aged between 25 and 74 stood at 3.0 per cent.<\/p>\n
