Victoria Lines section collapses at Wied il-Faham<\/p>\n
The striking stone silhouette of the Victoria Lines has suffered a fresh blow as a section of the historic infantry wall partially collapsed at Wied il-Faham, Friends of the Victoria Lines said on their Facebook page Saturday.<\/p>\n
Located on the Madliena side, this specific stretch of the fortification is widely regarded as one of the most visually dramatic and frequently visited portions of the entire structure.<\/p>\n
The Friends of the Victoria Lines said they have formally reported the damage to the Restoration and Preservation Department within the Ministry for Arts, Culture and the National Heritage.<\/p>\n
While the group acknowledges the intense workload and resource limitations currently facing the department, they have stressed that the structural integrity of this iconic site requires immediate and urgent intervention.<\/p>\n
Known as Malta’s Great Wall, the Victoria Lines are an 11-kilometer defensive fortification system that cuts across the width of the island. Construction began in the late 19th century under British colonial rule, intended to protect the island’s northern region from land-based invasions.<\/p>\n
The lines utilize the natural topography of the Great Fault, a series of hills and valleys that divide Malta, with the walls and associated forts, such as Fort Madliena and Fort Mosta, carefully integrated into the rugged terrain.<\/p>\n
Over the decades, the fortifications transitioned from a strategic military necessity to a recognized national monument, drawing hikers and history enthusiasts who traverse the various trails that follow the line of the wall. Today, the preservation of the limestone structures remains a challenging task due to natural erosion, weathering, and the sheer scale of the historical monument.<\/p>\n
