The Nationalist Party has been compelled to reschedule its general council gathering after parliament was called into session this Saturday, immediately following the recent general election.<\/p>\n
This upcoming council meeting is mandated by internal regulations to begin the leadership selection process whenever the party concludes a general election. According to the party constitution, if the group finds itself in Opposition, the executive must summon the council within 90 days of the official election results to review the outcome and initiate leadership confirmation.<\/p>\n
While Borg has signalled his desire to continue in his role and is not expected to face a rival, he must still undergo a formal vote of confidence. If he remains the sole candidate, only party councillors – rather than the general membership – will participate in a secret ballot.<\/p>\n
A similar situation occurred following the 2022 election, when Bernard Grech stayed on without opposition and subsequently received 81% backing from the council members.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Abela declared on Sunday that his administration intends to begin work immediately, scheduling Saturday’s parliamentary meeting for the swearing-in of elected representatives and the selection of a new Speaker.<\/p>\n
