This initiative further reinforces cooperation between the two countries in their efforts to combat human trafficking,” the ministry said.

Addressing the ceremony during which Al Kifah was formally handed back to the Libyan authorities, Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield, described the handover as an important milestone in the longstanding relationship between Malta and Libya. He highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to ensuring security and stability across the Mediterranean region.

The Minister noted that cooperation between Malta and Libya has delivered tangible results in recent years, particularly in efforts to combat human trafficking and reduce irregular migration along the Central Mediterranean route.

He said that the decline in irregular arrivals demonstrates the importance of coordinated action and close collaboration between countries facing common challenges.

While acknowledging the progress achieved, Minister Bedingfield stressed that further efforts are required to strengthen border controls, enhance cooperation between law enforcement authorities and intensify action against networks involved in human trafficking and the facilitation of irregular migration.

Referring to the Al Kifah, the Minister said that this investment reflects Malta’s commitment to maritime security and its practical support in maintaining operational capabilities across the Central Mediterranean.
