PN calls on the government to extend cap on rent for older persons to all vulnerable individuals<\/p>\n
The PN in a statement welcomed the Housing Authority’s decision not to increase rents for pensioners saying that this is a positive measure that will provide peace of mind to many older persons, but noted that there are other just as vulnerable people living in social housing.<\/p>\n
These include persons with disabilities, low-income families, single parents, carers and individuals who, despite being in employment, have limited income and are facing the same cost-of-living pressures, the party said.<\/p>\n
The PN therefore asked: “why is this protection being limited solely to pensioners?”<\/p>\n
“The guiding principle should be that no person in a vulnerable situation should be expected to shoulder burdens they cannot afford,” the PN said.<\/p>\n
The PN said that it supports every measure that helps people, while at the same time insisting on a fair and inclusive policy that leaves no one behind.<\/p>\n
The party added that such a policy must also protect the owners of properties being used by the Housing Authority, who have the right to receive a fair rent in line with market rates.<\/p>\n
“Solidarity has no age limit, but it must reach everyone who needs it,” the party concluded.<\/p>\n
