Enemalta crews working to restore power in Birkirkara, Balzan and Iklin as anger increases<\/p>\n
Enemalta’s engineers and technical crews have been deployed to address cable faults and restore electricity supply in Birkirkara, Balzan, and Iklin, the company stated.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Monday, Enemalta plc said that four separate, unrelated cable faults led to power outages across these three central localities and that “repair works commenced immediately.”<\/p>\n
Power cuts are again taking place on a daily occurrance, as the country goes through a heat wave which pushes people to use cooling systems which require energy to be operated.<\/p>\n
Health authorities have issued warnings for people to cool their homes, but what’s the point of this suggestion “if one does not have electricity,” one angry citizen said when he contacted The Malta Independent.<\/p>\n
Various parts of Malta, including Lija and St Paul’s Bay, were without power during the World Cup final on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
Over the past days, various localitites have been hit by power cuts that stretched into hours. These localitites included Mellieha, Sliema, Santa Venera, Marsaskala, Paola and Fgura.<\/p>\n
The energy company said Monday that it is still undergoing its “extensive, multi-year investment programme to strengthen and future-proof the distribution network.” As a result, reinforcement works are slated to take place across Birkirkara, Iklin, and Balzan “to further strengthen the locality’s electricity distribution network and support increasing demand.”<\/p>\n
Enemalta’s website states that the energy company is also addressing cable faults in San Ġwann on Monday.<\/p>\n
On this, Enemalta said that “While significant upgrades have already been completed, work is still ongoing to further enhance the network’s resilience and capacity to meet growing electricity demand.”<\/p>\n
Enemalta said it has deployed mobile generators to the affected substations in an effort to minimise the disruption caused as its crews look to restore electricity as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n
“Once the cable faults have been repaired, the affected substations will be reconnected to the electricity grid and the temporary generators removed,” Enemalta said.<\/p>\n
Malta is currently experiencing exceptionally high temperatures as part of an intense heatwave, resulting in record levels of electricity demand, it mentioned.<\/p>\n
Enemalta said that electricity demand on Monday is expected to exceed the previous all-time peak of 663MW that was recorded in 2023.<\/p>\n
Enemalta stressed that “electricity generation capacity remains sufficient to meet current demand” and that the present power interruptions “are the result of faults on the electricity distribution network.”<\/p>\n
The company said that it remains fully focused on restoring electricity supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.<\/p>\n
