Man arrested for failing to pay alimony admits to threatening magistrate and police sergeant<\/p>\n
A 42-year-old man from Ħamrun was fined €9,000 after admitting to threatening and insulting a magistrate and a police sergeant, while also breaching bail conditions. <\/p>\n
Jeffrey Cassar was arraigned in court charged with threatening and insulting a magistrate and a police sergeant, obstructing them from carrying out their duties, causing them to fear that violence would be used against them, and making threats that exceeded the limits permitted by law.<\/p>\n
He was also charged with breaching a bail condition and recidivism.<\/p>\n
The court heard that Cassar was the subject of an arrest warrant related to unpaid alimony. He had gone to the police station to sign the bail book when he was informed that he was under arrest. It was at that point that he lost control.<\/p>\n
Cassar began threatening and insulting the officers present, while also making threats directed at a magistrate and a police sergeant.<\/p>\n
He admitted to all the charges brought against him.<\/p>\n
The court sentenced Cassar to a €9,000 fine and also ordered the forfeiture of €500 from his previous bail deposit. <\/p>\n
The prosecution was led by Inspector Clayton Camilleri, while lawyer Nicholas Mifsud appeared for the defence. Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace presided over the case.<\/p>\n
