Dead whale found beached in Comino; public urged to keep distance

A dead whale has been found beached in Comino on Monday, prompting authorities to urge members of the public to keep their distance from the carcass while assessments are carried out.

On its Facebook page, Nature Trust said the discovery was reported earlier on Monday, when the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA) alerted relevant officials to the presence of the whale.

The whale has possibly been dead for days.

Over the past four hours, discussions and assessments have been carried out between ERA, veterinary surgeon Dr Chris Gruppetta, and other authorities to determine the safest way to remove the carcass, Nature Trust Malta said.

Officials said the priority is to ensure that the whale is removed without posing any risk to the public or the surrounding environment.

Authorities are strongly advising people to stay away from the carcass and not to touch it. While the cause of death is still unknown, whales are mammals and may carry diseases or conditions that can be transmissible.

Officials stressed that approaching or handling the carcass could pose potential health risks.

Work is ongoing to coordinate the removal of the whale from the site as soon as possible. Authorities thanked the public for their cooperation while the situation is being handled.
