Economic growth and quality of life highlighted in government plans

Minister Silvio Schembri and Parliamentary Secretary Rebecca Buttigieg on Tuesday outlined recent economic performance and future priorities, saying government policy has focused on sustaining growth while creating opportunities across key sectors.

Schembri referred to measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, including business support schemes and industrial investment, as well as interventions during the recent inflationary period, such as the Stability Scheme and energy subsidies.

He noted that Malta’s economy has grown significantly in recent years, with financial services, iGaming and digital technology among the main contributors. He added that international forecasts indicate continued growth, alongside a gradual reduction in the fiscal deficit.

Looking ahead, Schembri highlighted planned investment in infrastructure, clean energy, digitalisation and emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and immersive technologies. He also said there is consideration of broader indicators beyond GDP, including work-life balance.

Buttigieg said economic growth should translate into tangible improvements for families and workers. She pointed to strong employment trends, particularly in professional and technical roles, and referred to social measures such as free childcare and expanded family leave.

She also mentioned the recent public sector collective agreement and said the upcoming electoral manifesto will focus on sustainable proposals aimed at improving wellbeing and overall quality of life.
