First Dog Park at Ġnien Għarram in Ħaż-Żebbuġ inaugurated

In the Għarram area of Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Project Green has inaugurated the first dog park in the locality, transforming an underutilised site into a new open space for the community.

This project was made possible following recent traffic management upgrades along Triq Luret Cutajar and Vincenzo Andriolo, where an underused road and a roundabout were removed to make way for the new space. As a result, around 2,100 residents can now enjoy a newly created open area.

In collaboration with the Ħaż-Żebbuġ Local Council, Project Green said that it had prioritised accessibility throughout this project to ensure the space can be enjoyed by everyone.

Ġnien Għarram is divided into two distinct zones, a public open space for general enjoyment and a dedicated dog park where dogs can play freely and safely. The park is equipped with specialised play equipment for dogs, a pergola providing shade, a drinking fountain for pets, and designated seating areas with benches for visitors.

This open space features a variety of indigenous trees and plants that are suitable for environments shared with domestic animals. A total of 12 trees were planted, including olive, fir, and carob trees, along with a selection of shrubs such as rosemary, thyme, sage, and jasmine.

All vegetation is irrigated through an onsite water reservoir, ensuring an efficient and sustainable irrigation system. This approach reduces reliance on the water table and minimises the impact of external water supply challenges.

The 200-cubic-metre reservoir is connected to a system that collects rainwater from surrounding streets and pavements, allowing rainwater to be stored and reused. This mechanism not only improves water efficiency but also helps reduce soil erosion and eases pressure on the sewage infrastructure.

This system is an example of blue-green infrastructure, where natural and technical solutions work together to create new open spaces within urban areas through sustainability, resilience, and the efficient use of resources.

Dylan Abela Spiteri, Project Manager for this project, highlighted the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders to jointly deliver projects that benefit the community.

“Ġnien Għarram represents how sustainable transformation within an urban setting can create a community space that promotes wellbeing, biodiversity and accessibility. This project demonstrates how coordinated design and implementation among stakeholders can serve as a model for future urban greening interventions in Malta,” said Dylan Abela Spiteri.

Żebbuġ Mayor Steve Zammit Lupi remarked the importance of having a dog park within the community. “Thanks to the collaboration with Project Green, we now have an open space in the Għarram area that can be enjoyed by Żebbuġ residents and dog owners. This area includes a designated dog park, providing a secure environment where dogs can roam freely and socialise with other dogs,” said Mayor Steve Zammit Lupi.
