Fundraising telethon in aid of Puttinu Cares; government ups donation to €100,000
A fundraising telethon is being held today in aid of Puttinu Cares, as the voluntary organisation continues to expand its support for Maltese and Gozitan patients travelling to the UK for medical treatment.
Prime Minister Robert Abela was among those who attended the opening hours, donating €100,000 – adding €50,000 to the €50,000 he pledged last night when the maratjon walk that was to take place to raise funds was cancelled because of the weather.
The telethon comes at a significant moment for Puttinu, which is currently undertaking a major project in Central London that will see 29 new apartments added to its accommodation portfolio for patients and their families.
Works on the new property began in January 2026, and a contractor is already on site to bring the project to life. Once completed, the new apartments will increase Puttinu’s total number of residences in the UK to 49, all dedicated to supporting families facing the emotional and financial burden of travelling abroad for serious medical care.
At present, Puttinu already operates 20 apartments in Sutton, which over the years have hosted hundreds of families from Malta and Gozo while they undergo treatment in the UK. With the addition of the 29 new apartments in Central London, the NGO says it will soon be able to offer 49 “homes of hope” completely free of charge.
Puttinu described the apartments as far more than simple accommodation, saying they stand as symbols of solidarity, generosity and national unity.
“Every time we visit Puttinu’s apartments, we feel something truly special,” the organisation said. “We feel the love, generosity, and solidarity of the Maltese and Gozitan people. We can confidently say that almost every stone in these buildings has been sponsored through your kindness.”
The NGO added that the project is a source of national pride, reflecting the compassion and big-heartedness of the Maltese people.
“These are not just apartments. They are symbols of national unity. They are a clear reflection of the compassion and big-heartedness of our country. And we have every reason to be proud that, as a small nation, we have achieved something so meaningful.”
Puttinu underlined the importance of the service it provides to patients and their loved ones during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.
“When a patient leaves Malta for treatment in London, they leave everything behind – their home, their comfort, and often even their peace of mind. This is where Puttinu steps in,” it said.
The organisation is urging the public to support today’s telethon so that works on the Central London apartments can continue and more families can be given a place to stay without having to worry about accommodation costs while facing serious illness.
Donations collected during the telethon will go towards helping Puttinu complete the project and continue offering free support to those who need it most.
