Government boosts funding for free addiction rehabilitation services

The government increasing its expenditure towards rehabilitation services for people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, the Ministry for Social Policy said in a statement.

These services remain free of charge in Malta, placing the country in a unique position compared to others where treatment must be paid for. 

The Ministry for Social Policy is maintaining ongoing funding for organisations including Sedqa, Caritas and the OASI Foundation, it said.

A new social agreement has been signed with the OASI Foundation in Gozo, currently supporting 12 residents undergoing rehabilitation. 

The agreement is worth €2.3 million over three years, representing an increase of nearly 20% compared to the previous agreement. The funding will support residential programmes, therapeutic community services and aftercare, while also strengthening prevention efforts.

Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon said that people facing addiction challenges should seek help and invest in themselves, as services exist that can help them rebuild their lives.

“During the last years that I have led this Ministry, I have been able to feel the pain, the burden and the heartbreak of victims of addiction, with whom those closest to them drown,” Falzon said.

OASI CEO Noel Scerri praised the government’s commitment, saying it enables the continuation of these essential services. 

He emphasised the importance of long-term support programmes, describing them as a foundation and first step for individuals rebuilding their lives.
