Two men arrested in connection with international drug trafficking ring

The Police Force said it successfully carried out two arrests in connection with the alleged importation and trafficking of drugs, with the suspects operating together as part of an international criminal network.

In a statement, police said that in the first operation, they arrested a 54-year-old Dutch man who had just arrived in Malta on Tuesday on a flight from Brussels. Hidden in his trousers, he was found carrying around one kilogram of a substance suspected to be cocaine, with an estimated street value exceeding €130,000, police said.

From extensive investigations carried out, this drug was intended to be delivered to a person who is allegedly the main suspect behind the trafficking operation in the country, police said. Following prolonged surveillance, on Wednesday afternoon the Police arrested this individual, a 43-year-old Moroccan man, in Msida.

Searches carried out at his residence led the Police to seize more than €45,000 in cash, a Maserati vehicle, as well as branded watches, jewellery, clothing, shoes, and bags, police said.

In connection with these arrests, a Magisterial Inquiry has been opened, led by Magistrate Philip Galea Farrugia.

Both men are being held under arrest and are expected to be brought before the Court, where they will be charged with drug importation, possession and trafficking, money laundering, and organised crime, the police added.
